When you hear the words Manchester United, what do you hear?
Injury time winner against Munich in the champions league final to win the Treble? The 8-2 victory over rivals Arsenal? David Beckhams goal from inside his own half against Wimbledon?
What ever it may be, I bet none of it is the start of the 19/20 premier league season. As well as the end of the 18/19 premier league season.
Ole was st the wheel as interim manager after the sacking of Jose Mourinho. What a dream start the Norwegian had as caretaker manager for United. Winning 8/8 of his first games. Then came a tricky test against Arsenal, who ran wild and victorious beating the Red Devil’s 2-0. Since that game, United have been in a bit of a downwards spiral.
Losing 4-0 to wolves, getting knocked out the champions league and finish 6th in the premier league. Oh well, next season can only get better, can’t it? You would have liked to think so following the sales of Lukaku and Darmian as well as moving on the dead weight of Chris Smalling and Alexis Sanchez. Bring in Wan Bissaka and Daniel James. Who to be fair to them have played pretty well since their arrivals, James getting on the scoresheet on his debut as well as other games.
Every United fan would have relishing this season following those signings, and after a 4-0 demolishing off Chelsea at Old Trafford, the future looked bright. Then began the downward spiral, yet again.
A draw at Molineux against Wolves was to follow, with a big shocker the following week. Going down the tunnel onto the pitch at Old Trafford, I bet no Manchester United player, thought they would be walking back through that tunnel after 90 minutes 2-1 down. Crystal Palace who were searching for their first win on the season probably weren’t expecting it either, but credit where credit is due, they played their hearts out and got their first 3 points of the campaign. Then the trip to St Mary’s took a turn as they only just held out to share the spoils.
United have a difficult fixture as they travel to in-form Leicester on Saturday who have started their season off being unbeaten in 4 (2 wins, 2 draws).
The devils currently lie 8th in the table with 5 points from 4 games. One of their worst starts to a premier league campaign in many many years. Is this a sign that United need change? Does Ole need time to rebuild the squad before they can get back to challenging for the title and major trophies?
The next 5 games after Leicester for United could be crucial. West Ham away, Arsenal home, Newcastle away, Liverpool home & Norwich away. The optimism is there to gain at-least 9 points from 15 from those games, but you can’t shy away from the form West Ham and Norwich have been in at the start of this season. Teemu Pukki bagging 5 goals in 4 games for the Canaries in his debut premier league season.
Arsenal and Liverpool will also be tough take for United, even though they have the upper hand of playing at home, Liverpool are in a superb run of form and Arsenal are showing glimpses of being back to their old selfs.
